Matrimony, also known as Marriage, unites a baptized man and a baptized woman in a lifelong bond, or covenant, of faithful love to serve the Church, as a sign of Christ’s love for the Church. This is an exciting and happy time for the two of you and your families. It is also a time to lay the foundation for your future life together. There are ten steps to prepare for marriage in the Archdiocese of Chicago, to allow enough time for adequate marriage preparation, arrangements for weddings should be made at least 9 months in advance. When a couple decides that they want to marry in the Catholic Church they should contact their parish as soon as possible and make an appointment to talk with the priest, deacon, or staff person who is responsible for preparing couples for marriage. This person will explain the process of marriage preparation and the various programs that are offered.
The formal period of Catholic marriage preparation begins at engagement. When you make the decision to marry in the Catholic Church you enter into a discernment time about your life together as a married couple open to God’s grace.
If you are not already doing so, be sure you attend Mass together as a couple. You are approaching one of the most important days of your life, where you will stand at the altar of God and commit your lives to each other through the Sacrament of Matrimony.
