In the Sacrament of Holy Orders a baptized man is ordained as a bishop, priest or deacon to serve the whole Church. Through this sacrament he answers the call or vocation he received at Baptism to continue the work of Christ, to build up the Church and to seek the kingdom of God.
Priests are coworkers with their bishop. They lead us in the celebration of the sacraments and they preach God’s word. Priests stand for Christ and speak in His name. Deacons help the bishops and priests. They proclaim God’s word and can baptize and marry people. In some cases, they are married themselves. They minister to the sick and those in need.
Holy Orders, one of the Sacraments of Service, consecrates or sets aside for a holy purpose, members of the Church to serve the whole Church.
