The sacrament of Confirmation strengthens the graces of Baptism. Confirmation is one of the Sacraments of Initiation. Our new life in Christ is sealed by the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the Bible, we read that one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit is fire. In Confirmation we are filled with the Holy Spirit and our hearts are ‘on fire’ to live out our Baptism. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit and we are strengthened to continue the work of Christ.
The students of St. John’s School and Religious Education Program begin their preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation in seventh grade and celebrate the Sacrament after two years of Confirmation Faith Formation.
As part of the Confirmation process, students are asked to choose a sponsor. A sponsor is a spiritual companion who will support the candidate in their lifelong endeavor to live the Christian life. “The sponsor’s function is to take care that the person confirmed behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills the duties inherent in the sacrament.” (Code of Canon Law 892)
