The parish family of St. John the Evangelist is Christ-centered, welcoming, generous and dedicated. The cornerstone on our church reads, “The Blessings we receive are to be used for the Glory of God.” We believe all that we have comes from God and that we should use our gifts to help others as Christ did. Our parish family gladly welcomes visitors and new members and invites them to become a part of our community. We are generous in sharing our time and talents to serve God and one another. We dedicate ourselves to furthering the Kingdom of God here on Earth.
We, the people of St. John the Evangelist, pledge to follow the example of Jesus, our Lord, by always being charitable, compassionate, merciful, and loving, each day of our lives.

The parish was founded in 1962 by the Archdiocese of Chicago, assigning its first pastor, Rev. John Kyle, to create a parish community in Streamwood, Illinois. At the same time, the Archdiocese had decided to close and demolish a very aged structure known as Old St. John’s. Knowing that a new parish in the same year would be established in Streamwood, Albert Cardinal Meyer suggested that the new parish use the same patron name; thus originated the name, St. John the Evangelist. We are honored to have him as our Patron Saint.
On June 23, 1962, approximately 300 excited and hopeful families came together as a parish for the first time to celebrate the Eucharist with Fr. Kyle in a rectangular, yellow-brown circus tent on ten acres of land. This site would one day become St. John the Evangelist Church, School, and Parish Center. As the winter approached, the new congregation moved indoors, using the gymnasium of a local Streamwood public school. By September of 1963, a second worship site was completed as the new parish school and adjacent hall was finished. The Hall was used as a portable worship site on weekends.
Starting in December 1963, the Holy Name Society spearheaded a parish project to collect enough S&H Green Stamps to buy a school bus before the next school year began.
As always, the parish family of St. John’s pulled together and collected 2,171 books of Green Stamps and received a check for $4,342.00 to pay for a new 66-passenger school bus, with four weeks to spare before the start of the 1964 school year.
The new parish grew quickly, reflecting the vitality and commitment of the community. By 1968, when the doors of the new permanent church were opened, the parish membership had grown to 1,000 families. The new Church structure was built in the image of a Dwelling Tent such as the Israelites built to house the Ark of the Covenant during their 40-year journey in the desert.
In 1969, Fr. Thomas Boeger became the pastor of St. John’s. During his years as a pastor, the community continued to grow in size and vitality. Many of our first deacons were ordained during Fr. Boeger’s term as pastor. The parishioners became a family as they participated in worship and enjoyed other activities like the annual Country Fair. Longtime parishioners still remark about how much fun they had at the Country Fair. The school continued to be an important part of parish life.
In January 1985, Fr. William Moriarity accepted the position of pastor. Fr. Bill encouraged all people to be involved with their parish.
The number of parish ministries increased as parishioners heeded the call to actively participate in the spiritual and communal life of the parish. The parish population continued to increase in size and diversity.
In 1992, Fr. Robert Tonelli accepted the call to be the pastor of St. John’s, a community now numbering 3,100 families. At this time, our school had more than 225 students and over 650 children attended our Religious Education Program. During this time, the Parish reflected on its current needs and its desire to grow and also meet future needs and decided to embark on a campaign to build a new worship space and administration center.
The vision of ‘Securing the Future’ became a reality when Eucharist was celebrated for the first time in St. John’s new church on June 30, 2002. The parish respectfully said goodbye to the former worship site by kissing its altar, for it was exactly 34 years since the first Mass was celebrated in that sacred space then processed to the new church for the Liturgy. The new Church was dedicated on October 27, 2002 by Francis Cardinal George.
On July 1, 2010, Father Theodore Schmitt became the new Pastor and was installed on November 6, 2010. Following more than 3 years of faithful service to the community of St. John's , Fr. Schmitt was called to Eternal Life on Dec. 6, 2014.
Fr. Gregg Gorczyca was officially installed as the pastor of St. John's on Sept. 19, 2015 after serving as our interim pastor following the passing of Fr. Schmitt. In a way it was a returning home as his first parish assignment as a seminarian happened to be at St. John the Evangelist Parish with our then pastor Fr. Bob Tonelli and our associate Fr. Fred Pesek.
