My name is Jo Trisilla and I have been fortunate to be teaching in Catholic Schools for 31 years. I began my career at St. Laurence Catholic School for 29 years, and I am excited to be starting my second year at St. John's. I am a graduate of Northern Illinois University and have lived in the area for many years. My husband and I have one son who attended St. Laurence and continued on to graduate from St. Edward High School. My son also played football all the way through college and I have to say the greatest memories came from watching him play—so yes of course I am Chicago Bears Fan, actually I’m just a football fan and I have two pups that are appropriately named Blitz and Rookie.
I believe Catholic Schools provide a foundation for our children academically, socially, and spiritually. It allows a partnership between teacher and parent to give the students the tools they need to be successful, not only in higher levels of academics but in life. I am extremely excited to be a part of the St. John the Evangelist family and I look forward to teaching your children and meeting the families that make up such an incredible school. Go Tigers!

Science Curriculum Philosophy
The goal of science education is to create life-long learners and scientifically literate citizens. Students at all levels should be challenged and encouraged to pursue science and technology. The processes of science should develop the natural curiosity in students by actively engaging them in investigation using the techniques and technologies to foster the students’ scientific attitudes.
Science has a basic core of fundamental concepts, skills, and content, which provides the framework for the students’ understanding of natural phenomena. The content of science should develop an understanding and appreciation of the students’ environment and promote the exploration and excitement of scientific research. Science is a human endeavor, which develops critical thinking and decision-making skills to benefit individuals and their community.
The 6th grade curriculum focuses on Astronomy, Earth’s Structure, and Ecology.
Reading in 6th-8th grade is a combination of reading for comprehension and learning strategies to become a successful reader. Stories read in class cover genres such as fiction, science fiction, poetry, informational text, and more. Classes also focus on reading for enjoyment in which students will participate in D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) time and book clubs with students leading discussions. Several novels are also incorportated into each grade to teach strategies such as characterization, mood, plot development, setting , and theme. Students are assessed with formal and infomal assessments using tests, participation, homework, and projects.
The 6th-8th grade Language Arts curriculum is designed to develop the students’ grasp of proper grammar and to develop their writing skills. Students will practice using grammar in their everyday writing by applying concepts taught. Students will learn expository, descriptive, narrative, persuasion, and research writing. Research papers will be taught in connection with science: students will develop a science fair project based on their research. Classes will also engage in learning how to deliver speeches in the areas of persuasion, demonstration, opinion, and fact-based presentations. Students will be assessed using formal and informal assessments using tests, quizzes, participation, and writing projects.

Occasional monthly writing projects will be assigned. Wordly Wise is an effective Middle School vocabulary enrichment program that utilizes a three-prong strategy of solid vocabulary and spelling instruction, daily practice, and weekly assessments. This new curriculum replaces the Vocabulary Workshop workbook.
